Have a Merry Social Christmas – keeping momentum going over the holidays

With this strong focus on social media marketing, we are wondering what will happen with the branded accounts during the festive period? Social media, as we know, never sleeps and there will always be someone tweeting holiday moments or updating Facebook friends on how their day is going. This means that they could also be interested in festive deals, so it's an opportunity not to be missed by brands.

Make sure that all your hard work ahead of Christmas doesn't go to waste and keep your online community happy with these tips on how to keep momentum going over the festive period:

1. Silence isn't golden. Update both Twitter followers and Facebook fans about your ‘Social Christmas' times with a quick festive message. This way, if interested, people are aware of when they will get a reply if they contact you.

2. People will not expect instant replies, however, don't leave your branded Facebook page or Twitter account unsupervisedfor two weeks. Log on every two days to ensure that any negative comments or spam messages are dealt with in a timely manner.

3. Many people are likely to increase the number of blog posts they read over Christmas as they have more free time. Keep content fresh and schedule pre-written posts to be uploaded daily.

4. Speaking of content; encourage your community to share holiday snaps and thoughts on your pages. Just ensure someone monitors it to avoid unwanted surprises when you're back in the office.

5. Should the office be closed in between Christmas and New Year, schedule tweets ahead of time to keep the account active. There are many apps available, like CoTweet or Hootsuite, to help with this.

6. If you are the designated social media manager and are not working over Christmas, ensure that whoever is in the office is fully briefed on any activity taking place. Remember to include login details to avoid unnecessary calls.

7. Plan some special Boxing Day offers as a thank you to your followers. Everyone loves an extra gift.

We'd love to hear how you are planning your Social Christmas. If you have any additions to the above list, please leave us a comment below.
