Condé Nast prepares iPad versions of top magazines

Condé Nast prepares iPad versions of top magazines With the US launch of the Apple iPad just weeks away publishers have started to give details about their plans to launch magazines compatible with the new device. First off the blocks is Condé Nast which has been very vocal about the iPad and already demonstrated how its Wired technology magazine might look on an iPad style gadget.

The New York Times is reporting that later today it will announce an iPad version of its men's lifestyle magazine GQ. This will be followed by iPad versions of Vanity Fair and Wired which will be ready for download in May. iPad versions of other titles, such as the New Yorker and Glamour, will launch soon after.

At the current time how much the publishers will charge for the magazines is anyone's guess. The company is apparently seeing the launch as a test and will use it to experiment with a variety of pricing and advertising models.

It'll also be very interesting to see which UK magazine is first on the iPad and which is the first customer publishing title to debut a magazine on the device. At the moment Condé Nast UK's customer publishing arm, which works for Ferrari, Selfridges and House of Fraser among others, would seem to be the likely favourite.

All the Condé Nast titles will be available for readers to buy via Apple's iTunes store. As has been pointed out many times by media commentators the problems for publishers, especially branded content companies, is that all the user data is owned by Apple not the content creator.
